[/column][column width=”nine” place=”last][headline]Title[/headline]”Jingle Bells” is probably one of the more or the most popular songs played during Christmas. It was written by James Lord Pierpont and originally copyrighted under the title, “One Horse Open Sleigh” in the autumn of 1857. When it was reprinted in 1859, the title was revised to “Jingle Bells, or the One Horse Open Sleigh”. Although it has been taken as one of the more commonly sung songs during Christmas, it was actually derived from Thanksgiving. That’s right! It was first composed and sung during Thanksgiving, but it was mistakenly branded as a Christmas song because it was sung again during Christmas due to its popularity.

[headline]Author[/headline]James Lord Pierpont first composed Jingle Bells in 1850. It was written in Medford, Massachusetts, at the former Simpson Tavern, now 19 High Street in the center of Medford Square. James Lord Pierpont was inspired by the town’s popular sleigh races during the 1800s, which brought about the song.

[headline]Interesting Fact[/headline]On December 16, 1965, Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford, the two astronauts on board the Gemini 6 decided to play a prank on the Mission Control. They claimed that they saw some sort of Unidentified Flying Object (UFO), where the pilot was dressed in a red suit. The two astronauts followed up by playing their version of “Jingle Bells” on the harmonica backed by sleigh bells. Both of these instruments are now displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, where they are considered to be the first musical instruments ever to be played in space.

[headline]Lyrics[/headline]Dashing through the snow
In a one horse open sleigh
O’er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bob tails ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and sing
A sleighing song tonight

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
